PowerPi Open-Source Project ITXPower Launched: Turn Idle PC Power Supplies into PD3.1 Fast Charging Gadgets, Giving a New Value to 1 Billion Existing Units

Dec 24, 2025 PowerPi.com

Project Introduction

Recently, the PowerPi team officially launched the ITXPower open-source project, innovatively transforming idle PC power supplies into PD chargers. Through breakthroughs in core technology, this project gives a new life to a large number of unused PC power supplies. At the same time, with an open-source collaboration model, it sincerely invites global industry players to jointly improve the technology ecosystem, injecting new vitality into the green circular economy and the popularization of fast charging technology.

Statistics show that there are over 1 billion PC power supplies worldwide, many of which become idle as computers are updated, causing not only resource waste but also environmental pressure. The ITXPower project precisely addresses this issue, with a clear and efficient core technology path: the ITXPower module boosts the 12V output from PC power supplies to 48V, then processes it with DCDC buck technology, ultimately achieving PD3.1 high-voltage fast charging output. This conversion solution is not only technologically mature but also makes full use of idle resources, reducing the cost for users to obtain high-spec PD chargers.

Notably, the ITXPower project is deeply compatible with the ITX standard—as a mainstream size for PC motherboards, its compatibility means no extra design for specialized casings is needed. Users can directly use existing computer cases, or with simple modifications on small cases, use them as PD charger enclosures, greatly enhancing the solution's practicality and convenience and further lowering the modification threshold.

To promote the improvement and development of the project ecosystem, the PowerPi team adheres to the open-source sharing philosophy, inviting chip companies, engineers, enthusiasts, designers, and other global talents to participate. Going forward, PowerPi will officially release PCB dimension documents and product parameter definitions, and provide real-time updates on open-source progress through the PowerPi website and major social platforms, ensuring transparency and collaboration throughout the project development process.

The launch of the ITXPower open-source project not only reconstructs the value of idle PC power supplies but also builds an open technology collaboration platform. In the future, with more participants joining, it is expected to further optimize technical solutions, expand application scenarios, and promote innovation and popularization of fast-charging technology, contributing to green low-carbon development and technological innovation.

For more details about the project, you can follow the open-source progress updates on the PowerPi website and official social platforms.
